If you’ve never had a family photoshoot before, it’s completely normal to feel a bit unsure about what to expect — especially when children are involved.
Will everyone behave? Will it feel awkward? Will the photos actually look like you?
At Family Frames, the focus is on relaxed, natural family photography — creating images that feel honest, unforced, and true to your family as you are right now.
Here’s what a family photoshoot with Family Frames is really like, from start to finish.
Before the shoot: simple, relaxed preparation
There’s no long checklist or complicated preparation. Before your family photoshoot, I’ll talk you through what to expect and answer any questions you have — from choosing a location to what to wear.
I usually recommend:
- Comfortable clothes you feel good in
- Soft, neutral colours that photograph beautifully together
- Avoiding large logos or busy patterns that distract from faces
Sessions are planned around a time when children are usually at their happiest — often after a nap or a meal. Bringing along a favourite toy or snack can help keep things familiar, but there’s no pressure to prepare children in any special way.
The aim isn’t perfection — it’s comfort.
During the shoot: natural moments, not posed portraits
This is the part most families worry about — and almost always the part they enjoy the most.
There’s no standing in lines or forced smiling. Instead, your family photoshoot is gently guided and allowed to unfold naturally. That might involve:
- Sitting together at home
- Walking or playing outdoors
- Talking, cuddling, or simply spending time together
Children are free to move, explore, and be themselves. If someone needs a pause or a moment to reset, that’s absolutely fine. Some of the most meaningful family photographs happen in the in-between moments.
My role is to observe carefully — working with light, composition, and emotion — while keeping everything calm and unhurried.
What if the kids don’t “behave”?
This is one of the most common concerns parents have before a family photoshoot.
Children don’t need to sit still or smile on cue for beautiful photographs to happen. Curiosity, laughter, quiet moments, and even brief meltdowns are all part of real family life — and they’re often where the most honest images come from.
Because sessions are relaxed and pressure-free, children usually settle naturally. And if they don’t, that’s okay too. The goal is to document your family as they are, not to manufacture perfect moments.
After the shoot: timeless, natural editing
After your session, I carefully select and edit the images to reflect the feeling of the time you spent together.
Editing is kept natural and timeless, focusing on:
- Soft, true-to-life colour and black & white images
- Gentle contrast and natural skin tones
- A calm, cohesive look that won’t date
You’ll receive a curated gallery that tells the story of your family photoshoot — not just individual portraits, but a connected set of images that feel real and meaningful.
Why natural family photography matters
The best family photographs aren’t really about how everyone looks — they’re about how it felt to be together in that moment.
A hand being held.
A shared laugh.
The way your child leans into you without thinking.
These are the moments that last — long after the details fade.
If you’re looking for a relaxed family photographer in London who focuses on real connection rather than stiff posing, I’d love to hear from you.
